Washing machines account for 5,835 of the 25,671 repairs we have completed β just over a quarter of our work, second only to refrigerators.
We service front-loaders and top-loaders, belt-driven and direct-drive, standalone and stacked laundry units. Stacked machines in a closet take longer to reach, and we allow for that when scheduling rather than discovering it on the doorstep.
The fault and the price are confirmed before any part is ordered, and every repair carries a written warranty on parts and labour.
A washer will not spin with water still in the tub. That is deliberate β spinning a full drum would be violent and unsafe β so anything that stops the water leaving also stops the spin cycle. The machine looks dead when the drain is the actual fault.
This is why we check the drain path first: the coin trap or filter, the pump impeller, then the hose for kinks or a siphoning standpipe. After that comes the lid switch or door lock, which is a small mechanical part that takes thousands of cycles and eventually stops making contact.
The motor and control board come last. An error code tells us what the machine detected, not which part failed β a drain error can be the pump, a blockage, or a pressure sensor reporting water that already left.
| What you hear | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Silence at the drain step | No power reaching the pump β control, wiring, or a failed winding |
| Humming but no water moving | Pump energised and jammed β often a sock, coin or underwire |
| Drains fine, will not spin | Lid switch or door lock, then the belt or coupler |
| Grinding or growling on spin | Drum bearing β this one gets worse and more expensive quickly |
| Walking across the floor | Levelling, or worn suspension rods |
A machine that rocks by hand or walks under load is telling you about its suspension. Caught early that is a repair; ignored, the vibration damages the bearing housing and the machine becomes uneconomic.
Residue collects in the door gasket folds and in the drum. Hard water across the Houston area makes it worse β detergent does not dissolve fully, and the film that remains feeds odour.
Cleaning the gasket, running a hot maintenance cycle and cutting the detergent dose resolves most cases without a service call. If the smell returns within days, something is holding water: a partly blocked sump, a drain hose without a high loop, or a torn gasket that cannot be cleaned out.
Washer calls peak in July β 747 against 347 in September. More loads, more often, in the months when the machine is worked hardest.
