We have completed 1,634 oven and range repairs. We service gas and electric, built-in wall ovens, slide-in and freestanding ranges, single and double cavities.
Built-in units take real time to pull and reseat before the repair even starts. We allow for that when scheduling rather than discovering it on arrival.
Ovens produce the most understated complaints of any appliance. Nothing sparks and nothing leaks; food simply takes longer and browns unevenly for months before anyone calls it a fault.
The test costs about five dollars. Put a separate oven thermometer on the middle rack, set 350°F, and wait twenty minutes past the preheat signal — preheat indicators are optimistic on most ovens. Within 15°F is normal. Consistently 25 to 30°F low is a repair, not a quirk.
Most people have simply been compensating without realising it, adding minutes to every recipe to cover a cavity that no longer holds its setting.
| Reading | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| 25–30°F low, steady | Temperature sensor drift — inexpensive part, straightforward replacement |
| Swinging 50°F either way | The control is cycling badly rather than reading badly |
| Takes 25+ minutes to reach 350°F | A weakening bake element — it still glows, so it looks fine |
| Burns one side, undercooks the other | Convection fan, a failing element end, or a door not sealing evenly |
| Gas oven lights some mornings, not others | Worn igniter — still glowing, no longer opening the safety valve |
Many models allow a calibration offset. Use it if the oven is stable but consistently off; retest a week later. If it has drifted again, the sensor is failing and no amount of calibration will hold it.
Our records show 248 oven calls in November against 118 in September. That is not weather. An oven that bakes acceptably for short jobs all year gets asked to hold a steady temperature for six hours on Thanksgiving, and a drifted sensor or a tired element shows up immediately.
If you host, test in early November. Parts are easier to source before the holiday and a technician can actually reach you.
The self-clean cycle is safe to use in general, but it puts the cavity under real thermal stress — far above normal cooking temperature — and it occasionally finishes off a marginal element, thermal fuse or door lock.
Every year we take calls from people whose oven worked fine until they cleaned it for company. If it needs cleaning before a holiday, clean it by hand.
