Appliance Warranties β€” What Is Actually Covered

Appliance Warranties β€” What Is Actually Covered

Warranty terms are written to be precise rather than clear, and most people only read them after something breaks. Here is the practical version.

Three different things called "warranty"

Manufacturer warranty

Comes with the appliance. Typically one year on parts and labour, with longer cover on specific components β€” sealed systems on refrigerators and drive motors on washers are common examples. It covers manufacturing defects, not damage, misuse or wear.

Extended warranty or service plan

Sold by the retailer or a third party, usually extending similar cover for additional years. Quality varies enormously. The document matters far more than the sales description.

Home warranty

An annual contract covering multiple systems and appliances in a house. It normally has a service call fee per visit, a list of covered items, and per-item payout caps. It also usually requires you to use their assigned contractor.

The exclusions that catch people

These appear in most policies and are the reason claims get declined:

  • Improper installation. A dryer vented incorrectly or a dishwasher plumbed without a high loop can void cover on the resulting fault.
  • Lack of maintenance. Scale damage from hard water, or a dryer failure traced to a blocked vent, is frequently classed as neglect rather than defect.
  • Cosmetic damage. Dents, scratches and discoloured trim.
  • Consumables. Filters, bulbs, gaskets in some policies, and shelves.
  • Commercial use. A domestic appliance used in a business setting is usually excluded outright.
  • Unauthorised repair. Work by someone not approved by the warranty provider can end cover on that component.
  • Power surge damage in many policies β€” this often falls to home insurance instead.

Reading yours in five minutes

Find these five things and you know where you stand:

  • What is covered β€” parts, labour, or both, and for how long each
  • What is excluded β€” usually the longest section, and the one worth reading
  • Payout cap β€” per item and per year
  • Who does the work β€” assigned contractor or your choice
  • How to claim β€” some require authorisation before any work begins, and a repair started without it is not covered

That last point causes the most avoidable claim denials. If you have a policy, call them before you call anyone else.

Is an extended warranty worth buying?

It depends on what it excludes, not what it promises. A plan that covers the failures that actually happen β€” pumps, elements, boards, valves β€” has real value. One that excludes anything traceable to maintenance, in a hard-water area, covers considerably less than it appears to.

For a reliable appliance from a mainstream brand, setting the same money aside often works out better. For an expensive built-in where a single board can cost a large fraction of the unit, the calculation shifts toward buying cover.

Our own warranty

We warrant the parts we fit and the labour we perform, and we put both terms in writing on the invoice. If a repair we made fails within that period, we come back and make it right at no charge. A repair without a written warranty is not a bargain, whoever is offering it.

Common questions

Does using an independent technician void my manufacturer warranty?

For work covered under that warranty, use the manufacturer's authorised service β€” otherwise you may be paying for something you are entitled to free, and the repair may not be recognised. Outside the warranty period, or for items it excludes, you are free to choose.

Can I claim if I do not have the receipt?

Usually the serial number establishes the build date, and many manufacturers accept that. Registering the appliance when you buy it removes the problem entirely.

My home warranty keeps sending someone who cannot fix it.

Most policies have an escalation route and a second-opinion provision. Ask for it in writing, and keep a record of each visit and what was done.

Does a repair restart the warranty?

The repair itself usually carries its own warranty period on that part and that labour. It does not restart the appliance's original cover.
